Frequently Asked Questions
Below you'll find a list of frequently asked questions about our service that will hopefully answer any queries you might have before registering with us.
If there's anything not covered below though please do feel free to get in touch and we'll respond as quickly as we can.
Out of School Care can be variously known as breakfast clubs, after school services and holiday clubs.
At Chatterbox, we offer breakfast club and afterschool club across the school year.
Out of school care (OSC), also known as after school care (ASC), or school age childcare, is the provision of a safe, caring environment offering a range of active, stimulating and restful activities for school age children before and after school and during holidays. Out of school care enables parents to take up employment, education and training opportunities.
Out of school care schemes take parental responsibility for the children in their care. OSC services must register with the Care Inspectorate All workers must have a police disclosure check through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme and have to register with the SSSC and gain qualifications relevant for their role.
Chatterbox provides a service starting at 8.00am until 9.00am to provide childcare before the start of the school day. This consists of a breakfast and simple activities before the school day starts.
At the end of the school day, Chatterbox provides an afterschool club from 3-6pm. This consists of a healthy snack, lots of different activities and outdoor play
All of our staff are fully qualified and participate in yearly continuous professional development to enhance their skills.
We accept all government Tax Free childcare vouchers and families who have a lower income can access the universal credit childcare costs element to assist with fees.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO PARENTS TO PAY FOR CHILDCARE
WHAT SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE TO PARENTS TO HELP WITH CHILDCARE COSTS?
We know that childcare can often feel unaffordable, however, this is usually before knowing you can receive additional financial support from the UK government to pay childcare fees.
As an out of school childcare provider registered with the Care Inspectorate, most, if not all of our parents accessing (or potentially accessing) the service should be eligible for some form of financial support payment towards childcare costs.
WHAT FINANCIAL SUPPORT CAN FAMILIES ACCESS?
Families (earning just under £100,000) can receive an additional tax-free £2000 (per child, per year) to pay for 20% of childcare costs.
Many parents still use Vouchers to pay for childcare, however, this system is being phased out and is closed to new members; this includes people changing employers.
Once you leave one childcare voucher scheme you can no longer enter another existing one. However, parents could access the tax-free childcare system. The tax-free childcare system may even be preferable to parents currently accessing vouchers- it is worth their while investigating whether it is better to stay with the vouchers or join the new system.
For the lower income families, they may receive financial support of up to 85% to cover childcare costs through universal credits. They may also be able to access a up-front childcare cost payments to help with childcare costs.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IN TERMS OF AMOUNTS PAID BY PARENTS?
If we take the example of an out of school care service which charges £17 per session for a place after school, a parent on universal credit could receive financial support of up to £14.45 (85%), meaning they must cover the remaining £2.55 per session, a sum which seems more affordable.
Those families participating in the Tax-Free Childcare Scheme could receive £3.40 (20%) towards the cost of the place, meaning they must only cover the remaining £13.60 per session. If using the after school care full time during term-time (38 weeks) this could work out at a saving of around £646 per child, per year.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Currently there is little or no financial assistance given directly to school age childcare services. Some local authorities may provide no or low-cost lets, or support with training and qualifications, however, this is not guaranteed and varies greatly between Scottish Local Authorities.
Renfrewshire Council does not currently offer any support.
The one consistent and guaranteed form of funding is through support to parents from Tax-Free Childcare schemes and universal credits.
TAX-FREE CHILDCARE SYSTEM
Tax-free childcare is an additionality (of up to £2,000 per year, per child) for parents to pay for registered childcare. The payment goes directly to services but they must be registered for the scheme.
Parents and government both pay into a tax-free childcare account which then pays the service. Any money left over in the account when childcare is no longer needed is returned to parent and government.
The scheme pays 20% of childcare costs e.g. Chatterbox sessions costs £17= parent pays £13.60, govt pays £3.40.
To be eligible the child must be 11 or under and usually live with the parent. They stop being eligibleon 1 September after their 11th birthday. Adopted children are eligible, but foster children are not.
Parents must be earning at least the national minimum wage or living wage for at least 16 hours a week for at least 3 months. Parents can earn up to £100,000 per year.

TAX-FREE CHILDCARE AND SUPPORT FOR DISABLED CHILDREN
If a child is disabled and usually lives with the parents, they may get up to £4,000 a year until 1 September after their 16th birthday.
They’re eligible for this if they:
- get Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Armed Forces Independence Payment, Child Disability Payment (Scotland only) or Adult Disability Payment (Scotland only)
- are certified as blind or severely sight-impaired
Parents can use the extra Tax-Free Childcare money they get to help pay for extra hours of childcare.
They can also use it to help pay their childcare provider so they can get specialist equipment for the child such as mobility aids. Parents should talk to services about what equipment their child can get.

DWP encourages parents to contact their Work Coach through their Journal or discuss the support on offer and the details DWP need to consider payment.
BENEFITS CALCULATOR
Benefits calculators can illustrate how you can be better off in work or working more hours. There is no limit to how many hours you can work. This means Universal Credit will not necessarily be stopped if you work extra hours, have more than one job, get bonus payments, are on zero-hour contracts or get overtime.
The Benefits Calculators website (www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators ) includes links to the ‘Policy in Practice’, the ‘entitledto’ and the ‘Turn2us’ benefits calculators.

Chatterbox Childcare Ltd philosophy is to be as enthusiastic and passionate about every activity your child has the opportunity to participate in so that they feel inspired to try new things in a safe environment. We hope that this creates a relaxed atmosphere which helps your child to feel comfortable, make new friends and have fun the whole time.
At Chatterbox childcare Ltd your child’s well-being is our top priority so we make sure that all activities are carried out in a safe and controlled environment with the supervision of our trusted staff.
The activities we run are low risk in order to help minimise the number of accidents which may happen. Although, we actively encourage our children to risk assess their own danger as this is an important aspect of life. We will allow your children to try risky play under supervised conditions. This may at times lead to a bump or a scrape from time to time and children are likely to fall or bump into each other which cannot be avoided. If this does happen, your child will be in good hands as every one of our staff are a certified first aiders.
We run to Care inspectorate ratios for staff and children and all of our staff must be part of the Protected Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme and registered with the SSSC.
Chatterbox is provided in the wonderful and beautiful country of Scotland and as such we cannot guarantee good weather all the time. We will always try and have some outdoor time every day and so it’s important to bring warm layers to wrap up for when you may be out in the cold. However, for the days the sun does show up, remember to pack sun cream and plenty of fluids. Trainers and clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty can be brought and stored at the service to change into.
Mobile phones or watches that can call or take pictures are not allowed in the service. We have a room phone where you can call if needed and we upload daily pictures to our social media for you to see the fun we are having.
Yes, we are fully insured with Morton Michaels a specialist childcare insurance company. We also hold ICO certification for our data protection policy.

All our staff hold first aider certificates and their paediatric first aid certificates as well. So, if your child has an accident we will be in safe hands. An accident report will be written up which we will ask you to sign. This will state what happened, how many children were present, how many staff were present, what treatment was given and what follow up treatment may be needed.

Children must be signed in and out on arrival and departure by nominated guardians. We have highly qualified staff who are experts in the field of play work and play theory. Our children stay within the school environment during term time and so you can be confident they will be safe with us. Our staff undertake daily risk assessment on the environment and equipment we use and have strict food hygiene and allergy guidance in place. That being said, we do still encourage our children to make their own decisions around risk and so you should be prepared for the odd bump or scrape as they learn where their own unique limits are.
